Stripe Payments
Connect your Stripe account so clients can pay invoices online by card or, for eligible US accounts and USD invoices, ACH bank transfer. Money lands directly in your Stripe account, Keito records the payment when Stripe confirms it, and Keito charges zero platform fee.
Requirements
- A Keito Solo, Pro, or Business subscription.
- Administrator access in Keito.
- A Stripe account in a Stripe-supported country.
- Stripe account details, charges, and payouts enabled before live payments can be accepted.
What It Does
The Stripe Payments integration lets you:
- Accept credit and debit card payments globally where Stripe supports cards.
- Accept ACH bank transfers for US Stripe accounts on USD invoices.
- Enable or disable card and ACH at the integration level.
- Override card or ACH availability per invoice.
- Optionally pass eligible card or ACH processing fees to clients, with a default for new invoices and per-invoice choices.
- Send clients to Stripe Checkout from the public Keito invoice page.
- Record the payment against the invoice when Stripe confirms it.
- Move the invoice to Paid automatically.
- Send a receipt email to the client.
- Let clients opt in to automatic card payments for recurring invoices.
Keito uses Stripe Connect direct charges. Keito never holds client funds and does not take a platform fee.
How It Works
Stripe Payments is a workspace-level payment integration. A Keito admin authorises a Stripe account through Stripe Connect. When a client clicks the online payment button on an open invoice, Keito creates a Stripe Checkout session for the outstanding balance.
Stripe hosts the payment page, collects the payment details, and sends Keito webhook events when the payment succeeds. Keito records the payment against the invoice, marks the invoice paid, and sends the receipt email. Funds settle into your Stripe account according to your Stripe payout settings.
Connect Stripe
- Go to Settings > Integrations > Stripe.
- Click Connect Stripe.
- Sign in on Stripe’s page and select your existing Stripe business when it is offered.
- Authorise Keito in Stripe.
- Return to Keito.
- Complete any required Stripe account details in Stripe.
- Confirm charges and payouts are enabled.
- Enable card and, where eligible, ACH payment methods in Keito.
Keito sends you to Stripe’s authorisation flow; it does not create a new Stripe business before that redirect. You can connect an existing independent Standard Stripe account when Stripe offers it in the account selector.
If Stripe only offers Create a new business or Add a business, stop rather than completing the new account. Stripe can require a separate account when the existing account is controlled by another platform and cannot be connected to Keito with read/write access. Contact Keito support with a screenshot of the Stripe page so we can confirm the next step.
Account Readiness
The Stripe settings page shows readiness checks:
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Submit account details | Stripe has the business and identity details needed for payments. |
| Enable charges | The account can accept payments. |
| Enable payouts | Stripe can pay collected funds to your bank account. |
All required checks must pass before online payment buttons appear on open invoices.
Payment Methods
Cards
Card payments are available globally where Stripe supports your connected account and invoice currency.
ACH
ACH bank transfer is available only for US Stripe accounts and USD invoices. It is slower than cards but can be useful for larger invoices because bank transfer fees are often lower.
Per-Invoice Overrides
When creating or editing an invoice, use the payment settings to disable card or ACH just for that invoice. This is useful when a high-value invoice should use bank transfer only, or when a client should not pay a particular invoice online.
How Clients Pay
- The client opens the public Keito invoice page.
- They click Pay this invoice online.
- Keito creates a Stripe Checkout session.
- The client enters card or bank details on Stripe-hosted Checkout.
- Stripe confirms the payment by webhook.
- Keito records the payment, marks the invoice paid, and emails a receipt.
The Checkout session is created when the client clicks the pay button, not when the invoice is sent. This keeps the payment link usable for the life of the invoice.
When fee passing is enabled for an invoice, the public invoice page shows the available payment methods with their fees and totals before the client continues to Stripe. A card fee applies only to an eligible card payment; choosing bank transfer uses the bank-transfer fee setting instead. If that setting is off, no bank-transfer fee is added.
Fees And Money Flow
| Fee type | Who charges it | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Stripe processing fee | Stripe | Stripe’s standard processing fee for the payment method and country. |
| Keito platform fee | Keito | 0%. |
Funds move from the client to your Stripe account. Keito stores the payment metadata needed for the invoice record, such as Checkout Session and PaymentIntent references.
Pass fees on to clients
Automatic fee passing is available on Solo, Pro, and Business for eligible connected Stripe accounts. Fee passing is optional. Your saved fee policies and invoice choices are kept; fees apply only when the relevant workspace policy and invoice choice are enabled.
Set up your workspace
- Go to Settings > Integrations > Stripe and find Pass fees on to clients.
- Read and accept the statement confirming that you are responsible for checking whether fee passing is allowed where you do business.
- Turn on Credit card payments, Bank transfer (ACH) payments, or both, where available.
- Enter your account’s Configured processing rate and Plus fixed amount. For ACH, you can also set Capped at.
- Choose a Fee calculation:
- Percentage of invoice balance plus fixed cost calculates the fee from the outstanding invoice balance.
- Recover configured costs, subject to caps also accounts for processing the added fee. Caps can still leave some costs unrecovered.
- If you want new invoices to start with your enabled fee choices, select Turn this on for new invoices by default.
- Click Save fee settings.
The editable rate suggestions use Stripe’s standard domestic pricing. Check your own account’s rates: negotiated pricing and international-card costs can differ. These are configured fee estimates, not a guarantee that your Stripe net settlement will equal the invoice balance. Existing policies keep their calculation until you change the Fee calculation selection.
Choose fees on an invoice
Open a draft invoice’s Choose payment options step or Payment options editor. Under Pass fees on to client, choose Credit card and/or Bank transfer (ACH), then save. Each method must also be offered on that invoice and enabled in your workspace’s Stripe settings.
You can turn a fee off on an individual draft even when the new-invoice default is on. Changing that default does not update existing invoices. If a switch says Off in Stripe settings, an owner or administrator must first enable that method’s fee policy under Pass fees on to clients. Use Set up fee passing to open those settings.
Use fees on recurring invoices
Open the recurring template and find Online payment methods. Once the workspace fee policy is enabled, choose the applicable switches under Pass fees on to client, then save the template.
The template’s saved fee choices are copied to future invoices generated from it. Edit existing templates explicitly; changing the new-invoice default does not rewrite them or invoices already generated. An individual generated draft can still change its fee choices before it is sent.
Supported countries and methods
Availability follows the country of your connected Stripe account.
| Stripe account country | Card fee passing | ACH fee passing |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Credit cards only; Keito caps the fee at 3% | Available for USD invoices |
| Canada | Credit cards only; Keito caps the fee at 2.4% | Unavailable |
| New Zealand | Cards; Keito caps the fee at 4% | Unavailable |
| Other countries | Unavailable | Unavailable |
For US and Canadian accounts, debit and prepaid cards are excluded. If Stripe identifies one after payment, Keito automatically refunds the added card fee. You remain responsible for checking the rules that apply to your business, including local restrictions. The payment methods you can accept and the methods on which you can pass fees are separate choices.
Automatic fees versus a manual invoice fee line
Show card processing fee control under Invoices > Configure > Default Values reveals a manual percentage control. It adds a Card processing fee invoice line when you apply it; that line remains part of the invoice amount whichever payment method the client later chooses.
Use Pass fees on to clients in Stripe settings when the fee should depend on the client’s payment method. A manual card-processing fee line and automatic checkout fee passing cannot be combined on the same invoice. Remove the manual fee line before turning on checkout fees, or turn off checkout fee choices before adding the manual line.
Disconnect Stripe
- Go to Settings > Integrations > Stripe.
- Click Disconnect Stripe.
- Confirm the disconnect.
- Keito revokes the OAuth connection.
Existing invoice payment history remains in Keito and Stripe. New online payments cannot be initiated until Stripe is connected again. Automatic card payments that clients set up for recurring invoices stop, and clients must opt in again after you reconnect.
Troubleshooting
The pay button is missing
Confirm the invoice is open, has an outstanding balance, your Stripe connection is active, charges are enabled, and at least one payment method is enabled for the invoice.
Payment succeeded but Keito still shows open
Stripe webhooks can be delayed or retried. Refresh the invoice after a few moments. If it still does not update, refresh the Stripe integration status and check whether Stripe shows the payment as complete.
ACH is unavailable
ACH requires a US Stripe account and a USD invoice. Use card payments or another payment method for other countries or currencies.
A fee option is missing or disabled
Check that Stripe is your selected online payment provider, the connection is active and charges are enabled, and the Stripe account country supports the fee method. An invoice must offer that payment method too. For a disabled invoice switch labelled Off in Stripe settings, complete the acknowledgement and enable the method’s fee policy in Settings > Integrations > Stripe > Pass fees on to clients.
For a recurring template, fee switches appear only after the workspace policy and matching payment method are enabled. See Pass fees on to clients for the setup steps.
Stripe asks me to create a new business
Return to the Stripe account selector and check whether your existing business is available. If it is, select it and authorise Keito. If Stripe only permits a new business, do not complete the flow until Keito support has reviewed the screen with you; the existing account may be controlled by another platform and ineligible for this connection.
