Invoice Appearance Overrides
Invoice appearance overrides let you control individual divider lines and the space before Subject with a small JSON object. Both horizontal lines remain visible, the vertical line beside Subject stays off, and Subject spacing stays standard by default. Your invoices keep their existing appearance until you choose to change it.
Workspace owners and administrators can edit these settings under Invoices > Configure > Appearance > Invoice appearance overrides.
Hide both divider lines
- Open Invoices > Configure > Appearance.
- Find Invoice appearance overrides.
- Paste this JSON into the editor:
{
"dividers": {
"subject": false,
"amountDue": false
}
}
- Select Save appearance.
- Open an invoice preview to check the result. Download a new PDF if you also want to check the PDF version.
This hides the horizontal line immediately above Subject and the line immediately above Amount Due. Hiding the Subject line also reduces the surrounding space, while the Subject section keeps its full-width layout. Hiding the Amount Due line leaves its spacing unchanged. Item-table rules, the Notes separator, and other invoice content keep their existing appearance.
Change just one line
Only include the setting you want to change. To hide the line above Subject while leaving the Amount Due line visible:
{"dividers":{"subject":false}}
To hide only the line above Amount Due:
{"dividers":{"amountDue":false}}
If the editor already contains overrides, edit that object to keep any settings you still want. Saving a replacement object also replaces the previous overrides.
Use compact spacing before Subject
Set spacing.subject to "compact" to reduce the space before an existing Subject section. To hide both divider lines and use compact Subject spacing, save this JSON:
{
"dividers": {
"subject": false,
"amountDue": false
},
"spacing": {
"subject": "compact"
}
}
Select Save appearance, then reopen the invoice preview or generate a new PDF to check the result.
Spacing and divider choices are independent. Compact spacing does not hide either divider. If you keep the Subject divider visible, its line and separating space remain. The Subject section keeps its full-width layout, and compact spacing has no effect on invoices without a Subject.
To restore standard spacing while keeping your divider choices, change "compact" to "standard" in the same object, or remove the spacing.subject setting. Keep the dividers entries you still want. Saving a new object replaces all previous overrides; it does not add to them.
Add a vertical divider beside Subject
Set dividers.subjectVertical to true to add a vertical line between the Subject label and its text. When the invoice dates appear on the left, this line continues from the divider beside the invoice details through Subject.
To add that vertical line while keeping both horizontal lines hidden and using compact Subject spacing:
{
"dividers": {
"subject": false,
"amountDue": false,
"subjectVertical": true
},
"spacing": {
"subject": "compact"
}
}
Edit your existing object to keep any other options you want, then select Save appearance. Reopen the invoice preview or generate a new PDF to check the result.
If you use the Appearance option to show the client’s address on the left, the dates move to the right. In that layout, Subject gets a separate vertical divider on the left. Subject keeps its full-width layout in either case.
This vertical divider is independent of the horizontal lines and Subject spacing. It has no effect on invoices without a Subject. Set dividers.subjectVertical to false, or remove that setting from your object, to hide it again while retaining the other options.
Supported settings
| JSON setting | Default | Effect |
|---|---|---|
dividers.subject |
true |
Shows the horizontal line immediately above the Subject section. Set to false to hide it and reduce the surrounding space. |
dividers.amountDue |
true |
Shows the horizontal line immediately above Amount Due. Set to false to hide it. |
dividers.subjectVertical |
false |
Adds a vertical line beside Subject. It joins the invoice details divider when the dates appear on the left, or stays separate when the dates appear on the right. |
spacing.subject |
"standard" |
Controls the space before an existing Subject section. Use "compact" to reduce it or "standard" to keep the existing spacing. |
Use the JSON boolean values true and false, without quotation marks, for divider settings. Subject spacing uses the quoted string "standard" or "compact". A setting you leave out uses its default. Saving {} or {"dividers":{}} therefore keeps both horizontal lines visible, leaves the vertical Subject divider off, and uses standard Subject spacing. These settings do not add a Subject section to an invoice that has no subject.
These are the supported appearance override keys. Other appearance options, such as the logo, paper size, theme, and visible table columns, still use their existing controls on the Appearance page.
Restore the default appearance
To restore both horizontal lines, turn off the vertical Subject divider, and use standard Subject spacing:
- Select Clear beside Invoice appearance overrides, or delete all the text from that editor.
- Select Save appearance.
Clear changes the editor only; save to apply the reset. It resets the whole appearance overrides object, including spacing. To change just one option, edit that setting in the existing object instead. For example, set either horizontal divider to true to show it again while keeping your other overrides.
Appearance and text use separate editors
Invoice appearance overrides uses the same JSON editing pattern as Invoice text overrides, with a separate set of keys and value types:
- Use Invoice appearance overrides for divider settings with boolean values and Subject spacing with
"standard"or"compact". - Use Invoice text overrides for labels and default wording, with string values. For example,
{"amountDue":"Balance payable"}changes the label.
Keep each object in its own editor. Renaming the Amount Due label does not change the dividers.amountDue key. These settings accept the documented JSON options; they do not accept CSS or HTML.
See Invoice text overrides for the supported label and wording keys.
Where changes apply
Saved appearance overrides apply across the workspace’s invoice previews, public invoice links, browser printouts, and newly generated PDFs. They also affect existing invoices the next time those documents are rendered. They do not apply to estimates.
A PDF you already downloaded or sent as an email attachment stays as it was. Generate a new PDF after saving if you need a copy with the new appearance.
These settings change presentation only. They do not change invoice data, line items, taxes, totals, payments, or payment details.
If the JSON will not save
Check that the editor contains a JSON object and uses the exact key names shown above. Keys and spacing values need double quotes; boolean values do not. Remove trailing commas and comments.
For example, use {"dividers":{"subject":false}}, rather than {"dividers":{"subject":"false"}}. For spacing, use {"spacing":{"subject":"compact"}}. Unknown keys, divider values written as strings, unsupported spacing values, null, and arrays are not accepted. Correct the error shown, then select Save appearance again. Your saved settings remain in use until a valid change is saved.
